 Putting web links into posts
« Thread Started on Jan 28, 2006, 10:03am »

If you want to put a link to a web page in a message, you can simply paste in the address of the page (copy it from the Address box in your browser when you're looking at the page). The address will then appear in your post in blue, and it will be a clickable link.

For example, to link to one of our favourite pages ;D, just type or paste in:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/northandsouth/

It's automatically made clickable.

However, some addresses have commas in them, and then the link goes wrong - only half of it is recognised as being an address so only half of it is made clickable, and so the link doesn't work. (People then have to copy the whole address and paste it themselves into a browser's Address field.)

If you want to avoid this, try the following, it's much neater. :)

1. Amongst the tags above the message box is a button with the world on it (second row, second from the left). Click the button and it will put the following into your post:

{url}{/url}

(The brackets will actually be square.)

2. Then simply add to it like this (the colours are just to help make it clearer);

{url=the address of the web page}Click here{/url}

What will appear in your post will be:

Click here

When you hover your cursor over it, you'll see that it's clickable, and if you click it, it'll go to the web page whose address you put into the tag.

Of course you don't have to use the words "Click here", anything will do!

So, to make a link to the same page as above, type (and paste) the following:

{url=http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/northandsouth/}Click here!!{/url}

(but with square brackets)

And you'll get this:

Click here!!

Incidentally, it's usually better to make the text bold, so it's obvious that the text in your post is actually a clickable link. Add {b} before the text and {/b} after it. So...

{url=http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/northandsouth/}{b}Click here!!{/b}{/url}

This is what it'll look like:

Click here!!

Stella has suggested another solution to the problem of long URLs and URLs that don't work because they have commas in them.

Go to http://tinyurl.com/. If you paste in the address of the web page you want to link to, they'll give you a much shorter one that will also link to the same web page. You can then copy and paste the short address into your message.

Thanks Stella!

Thanks for that mini tutorial Annette - I've always wondered how people manage to put in words, rather than the web address for links. :)

Thank you! I was looking everywhere for this. I know HTML but was at a loss to figure out how to change the click text in links in message board speak.
